A Louder Silence

A Louder Silence is a short film created by New Measure Media for the Edmonton International Film Festivals 24 hour film creation challenge, called 24/One. We had 24 hours to write, shoot, edit, and deliver a short film that met the special criteria for this competition.

Although, this year, the prompt was different than any other prompt before it. We had to use the names of films already at EIFF as the title for our film, and the title had to relate to the film. This was a challenge for us since we had sort of brainstormed some concepts that we could drop in a location or a prop that would work with the concept, but we needed to start from the drawing board.

We ran through several options, but it took a while for us to settle on one that we thought that we could accomplish in 24 hours. While some team members were writing and polishing the script, the others went to get lunch and props for the shoot. We finished writing at about 1:00 pm.

We decided to shoot our film at William Hawrelak Park for the park sequence, so we carpooled out there. After a lap around the park, we found a place where the lighting was just right, and we could easily set up our shots without much disturbance. After the park, we went to NAIT for the alley scene. It was nice that our final location was right by our base of operations so that we could quickly wrap production and get started on the edit.

After we finished filming, we all went out for a quick dinner. It was then that Nick and Kyle said goodbye to the group and went off to start editing. This was at about 9:00 pm.

Nick and Kyle sayed up through the night to get the edit completed. All in all, they stayed up until about 4:00 am, at which time Nick went home and Kyle was left to export and deliver the video. Fortunately, Kyle was able to get about 5 hours of sleep in before waking up to drop off the video at the EIFF offices.
