The Case

The Case is a short film created by New Measure Media for a short film competition. The goal of the competition was to write, shoot and edit a short film within 48 hours.

On March 14, 2014, the team received the list of requirements for the 48 Hour film challenge. They had to use a suitcase as a prominent prop, and the line “You can’t handle the truth”. So that Friday afternoon, the team started brainstorming and came up with an outline which they then refined into a script.

On Saturday, the team spent a cumulative 2-3 hours filming, and then I took the cameras and the separate audio recorder to our editing bay to offload the footage and audio clips. Kyle was editing the project and was very satisfied with the quality of the film and the look achieved, especially under such time constraints.

After a solid round of post production, some ADR, and a press of the “Export” button, the film was finished! The team was able to submit the film just minutes before the deadline to secure their place in the competition.

The ElkFest Film Festival took place about a month later, on April 16, 2014. The a multitude of films across several categories were screen, in addition to all of the 48-hour challenge submissions. After weeks of waiting, the winner was announced, and it was The Case! The team was overjoyed, and Nick and Kyle went to the stage to accept the award. The team then went to a local diner to celebrate the victory.

Here is the video that was edited within the 48 hours, and here is the director’s cut that was refined after the submission. Hope you enjoy them!
