I made this video as a favour to my German teacher. She’s afraid that the school will be forced to cancel the German program next year due to a lack of interest, so she wanted a video that would show people the German program maybe in a way they hadn’t seen it before.

I arrived on shooting day with my camera bag, a single light kit (bulbs, head, stand, softbox), and a tripod. I was going for portability and mobility. I was able to shoot some interviews during lunch, and then get lots of B-roll during my class. I also cranked out a few interviews then too. I actually ended up not needing the light kit because the fluorescent lighting in the class was adequate, and it wasn’t worth the time to set up the light kit for a marginally better lit image.

I went home, and then spent the night importing my clips, syncing audio, colour correcting, and beginning a preliminary edit of the video; mostly just sorting out the interview clips so that I could piece together a story, but changing between the different interviewee’s. I was really proud of the clips that I got, specifically from the interviews. One thing I did notice is that I didn’t get enough B-roll. I cut in every bit of usable B-roll I could find, and even then, it wasn’t enough to cover some parts of the video.

Overall though, I am really glad with the product that I produced. I am looking forward to making more videos like these in the future. I had a really great time, and I learned plenty from it. Here is the link to the page on Sal’s website and here is the link to the video itself on YouTube!
